Climate

The climate in Calabria has not really 4 seasons, but 3. The short spring is early April to late May, with occasional a rain shower and temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees. Summer is from early June to the end of September (25-32 degrees), with heat peaks of sometimes 35 degrees in July and August. October is a late summer month and November the transition to the so-called winter. From December to March there are autumnal moments, sometimes with strong winds and not too much rain. The so-called "winter" temperatures are on average between 10 and 15 degrees. It could be a single week slightly lower, but usually it is 13-18 degrees during the day.

Typically, the so-called autumn weather may last one day, but rarely longer than 3 days. Then the sun shines like crazy. It is only 1 or 2 times a year that it is about 10 days drizzling. It never freezes here and if ever (1x in approx. 25 years) a little snow falls, everyone is free from work and school..

The nature is untouched. On one site poor and "no money" to further developping Calabria, but on the other hand very rich in natural authenticity. On the coast the rugged rocks and inland the National Parc of Sila, with the big hills and where the wild horses run free. That is where you can still walk around for hours without seeing anyone or anything. Isn’t that glorious...

For us, these are excellent conditions, but for the agricultural sector in Calabria a bit less. Because, if it’s rain so little, it does not benefit the fruits and vegetables. In summertime the water will be sprinkled, which was stored in the high mountains of Sila (rainwater) and via a pipeline system distributed throughout Calabria. Because there’s not always enough water available, the most necessary land has to be sprinkled. Not the rest of the landscape and that’s why the tourists in the summertime see only a yellow and parched landscape. There are summers that a water shortage, and thus the population, is experiencing this problem. That means that they received no water during the day but at night a small trickle.

The lessons learned from the past, we took care and installed at Casa Bahati a large watertank, in a wat that our guests and ourselves will have no water problem at all. That may also mean that there are summers when we cannot set up and fill the large children's pool on the terrace.

Trascorrere l'inverno

This region is ideal for so-called hibernation for people who are not fascinated by the gray autumn and cold winter period, which in the Netherlands and Northern Europe sometimes starts in September and ends in May. By Dutch standards there is no winter here; here on the coast it never freezes and there is at most a short period of only one month of one type of autumn.

We do not want to give statistics from the past, because "the results achieved in the past are no guarantee for the future". However, we experienced so-called winters in which - with the exception of 5-10 days - we usually had breakfast and lunch on the terrace outside. It also happened that this was not possible for 1 month due to wind, or temperature and/or rain. However, the sun shines much more here than in the Netherlands and Northern Europe and the temperatures are noticeably higher here. For this reason Reggio Calabria is attractive for hibernation, especially for those who have difficulty with the rainy autumn and winter periods.

Are there no winter images in Calabria? Yes, in the high mountains of the Sila National Park, about 1 hour's drive from Casa Bahati. In the villages of Camigliatello and Villaggio Palumbo (at Lake Ampulino), among others, there is – in principle – a lot of snow. Then there are opportunities at Villaggio Palumbo for skiing, sledding and cross-country skiing

If it is cool or cold at Casa Bahati, when the sun disappears, we provide a gas heater. Gas consumption (cylinder) is the responsibility of the tenant. If you rent villa Janina, there is a fireplace and air conditioning. The costs of wood (this depends on the stock) and/or additional costs of normal electricity consumption will therefore be borne by the tenants. Although rental prices are listed on this site, the winter rental price is negotiable. That is, the price indicated is calculated on the 1st month, but an increasing discount is applied in the following months.
